  1. You will work in a cooperative group of four students. Your group needs to divide up the roles between your four members. If you can not easily decide who will take which role, try "rock-paper-scissors" .
      • Juan de Fuca tectonic plate specialist/expert
      • Earthquake specialist/expert
      • Mt. Everest specialist/expert
      • Ring of Fire specialist/expert
  2. Each assigned role has its own starting point in the WebQuest. Please start at your assigned role and fill out your "Making Mountains out of Molehills" worksheet. (each expert has their own worksheet)
  3. Complete your worksheets by going to each step of the Webquest and answering the questions.
  4. Locate a plate tectonics world map image and save it in your file.
    • Write down the keyword you used for searching for the image, the name of the program and date of publication on your paper. (correctly cite the source of the image)
  5. Locate the image of a subduction zone.
    • Write down the keyword you used for searching for the image, the name of the program and date of publication on your paper.
  6. Research the geology of the area you live in.  With your group, answer the following question:  Can a volcano erupt in my backyard?  explain why or why not.
  7. Complete the "Tectonic Plates Lab" activity and save at least 2 images from YOUR group's experiment to use in an upcoming presentation.
  8. As a group, make a PowerPoint presentation sharing your expert knowledge about plate tectonics, earthquakes, and volcanoes, especially as they apply to the area you live in.  Conclude your presentation with a slide that answers "Can a volcano erupt in your backyard".  Be prepared to defend your answer.
