A geologist is a person who scientifically studies the origin, history and structure of the Earth. You are now going to become a specialist in your assigned geology topic. Please look at your GEOLOGIST page and start with the first question and go through it until you have completed the assignment. As you are working on the assignment, ask yourself the following question: "How does my topic connect to the other three topics?"

Earthquake Expert! (get worksheet)

  1. Learn about tectonic plates both from the Volcano World website on tectonic plates and from the Encarta CD!
  2. Learn about earthquakes at Volcano World's Earthquake page. Click through at least 5 of their slides.
  3. Check out Nova's Savage Earth site showing types of faults!
  4. Go to this part of the Nova site and select the The Hot Zones animation (it's highlighted in purple- below the map of the plates)
  5. Have there been any Earthquakes in the Bay Area in the last few days? Check out the USGS map showing all earthquakes! A map of the state of California is also available.

  5. Locate and learn about three (3) volcanoes that are both in the United States and in the Ring of Fire. Look for Volcanoes at the Volcano World Volcanoes Page

The Juan De Fuca Tectonic Plate Expert (get worksheet)

  1. So, just what is a tectonic plate? Use the Encarta CD and the Volcano World website on tectonic plates.
  2. Find out if Earth's crust is solid or broken into pieces. Use the Microsoft Encarta CD to find out this information. Copy your answers onto your worksheet and copy the tectonic plate map onto your disk Check out the Volcano World website on tectonic plates!
  3. Answer the questions about the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate at the following two sites:
